Part of the estate of a deceased Jewish woman named Gretchen "Gretl" Oestreicher Warschawski Warner who was lucky enough to escape Germany in the 1930's shortly after the Nazi's rise to power. This set consists of a suitcase containing 30+ documents, ID's, and mementoes of immigrant Hugo Ostreicher and members of his family. These were found in a decrepit warehouse in Los Angeles, California a few years back.

Hugo Oestreicher had found himself caught up in the political and legal changes introduced in Nazi Germany in the 1930s that reduced Jews to a status of non-citizens, and the implementation of anti-Jewish laws passed in part to induce Jews to leave Germany. He understood early on the urgency of the situation decided to leave along with his Jewish wife Berta, daughter Gretchen "Gretl", and Jewish son-in-law Arnold Warschawski.

The set has been very well researched as well as the long and complex route Hugo Oestreicher, his wife Berta, and this suitcase took to get from Nazi Germany to Shanghai, China and from Shanghai to San Francisco, and eventually to Southern California.

The most striking piece of the set is the distinctive personalized German Derby Koffer brand vulcan fiber suitcase in which the rest of the items were stored. These same style suitcases can be found in Holocaust museums all over Europe and were a means for deported Jews to carry their most important belongings to ghettos and concentration camps during deportations.

Other items recovered from the suitcase include a rubber name stamp showing that Hugo Oestreicher had his own Metzgerei or butcher shop in Ermetzhofen. There is also a white porcelain name plate from a house door, once broken but repaired before it arrived in America.
